Imaginary Creatures

I mentioned these Kindergarten collages on a previous blog post and I figure it is time to share them.  They are wonderful!  I have to give credit to the PTA for inspiring me to excitedly pull these from my closet; they were looking for art to feature in our school directory. So Creek View friends, keep your eyes open.

Stories are a great way to start an artwork.  In this case, Kindergartner's listened to the famous story written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things are.  We talked about the illustrations.  Kindergarten noticed the feathers, scales, and fur, which opened the door to the element of art, "texture."  Aside from texture, we talked about and used geometric and organic shapes but most importantly, we had fun creating something from our imagination.

Glitter Goodness!

In the spirit of the season.  We drew and decorated some seasonal cookies.  YUM.

Matisse's Moving Compositions

By 3rd grade we know the name Matisse.  We have seen many of his artworks from his paintings to his collages.  This time around, Matisse showed us about arranging an interesting composition.

We also talked about, considered and applied what we know about the color schemes ... we even created our own colors while painting papers to use in this artwork. We used geometric shapes in the background and organic shapes for our figure. We strived to lead the viewer's eyes around the composition and communicate an action and possibly even a feeling.

LOIS EHLERT INSPIRED COLLAGE

Kindergarten enjoyed these.  Cutting, overlapping and gluing shapes together  =  endless possibilities.  We tried really hard to make sure we made it interesting by showing variety and rhythm  ... kinda like music you can see.  Just lovely and fun to look at.

Matisse inspired Snowflakes

Winter seemed like the perfect theme for our artwork.  Since mother nature isn't making much snow for us this winter, we decided we would make the snow ourselves.

Matisse got us thinking............

• How would using warm or cool colors change the feeling in my artwork?

• How can I make shapes that have symmetry and radial symmetry?

• Why do I think positive and negative spaces are important in my artwork?

1st grade did a great job!  I love how everyones' looked different from the way they organized their cool colors and arranged their snowflakes to the individuality in each flake of snow ... no two are the same.

Matisse Collages

The wild world of Henri Matisse .... 2nd Graders had a blast making these abstracted musical collages. Using expressive lines and warm and cool colors combined with organic and geometric shapes we shared our favorite type of music.
